Firstly an update on the wanted items: we do now have a cheese grater (although we’ve realised that Americans mostly buy their cheese ready-grated) and some rubber gloves “hooray” says Lynne, but no washing machine yet. Our friends Claire and Duncan are very kindly letting us use theirs at the moment, and we may just carry on managing with that as otherwise it means renting a machine for our apartment.
Since our last update we have acquired a dining table and a coffee table… This table-fest has transformed our mealtimes, and the place feels more like home.
We’ve found a great place to volunteer- it’s called The San Antonio Clubhouse and we’re helping out there a couple of times a week. Denzil is finding out about activities they do and hoping to introduce some soccer ( we have to call it ‘soccer’ in America as ‘ football’ is an altogether different kind of game!) Lynne is mostly helping out in the kitchen, preparing about 50 hot meals a day.
We’re finding our way around San Antonio by car- we thought it was a big city, turns out it’s the 9th largest city in the whole of America!
The sky at night is amazing- you can see lots of stars and even planets, and the moon looks very different from over here!
The weather is as interesting over here as it is at home: when we leave the house at 8 a.m. we have to put the heater on in the car. By noon we are usually just in t-shirts and jeans, and by 3 p.m. we have to put the air- conditioning and sun glasses on…. That’s how we roll in Texas!
