Only in Texas….
We’ve been enjoying some uniquely Texan experiences in the past couple of weeks.
Wearing checked shirts, waistcoats and the obligatory cowboy boots, we headed downtown for the annual San Antonio Rodeo. It lasts about 10 days and is a huge event, drawing crowds of all ages for day and evening activities. There are things to look at- big tractors, big BBQ’s, big trailers, big hats……Things to do- eat BBQ food, go on fairground rides, listen to live music and watch animal related competitions … On the evening of our visit ( we were given complimentary tickets in a box close to the arena) we saw horse riding, horse racing, bull riding, sheep riding! (by very small children) calf wrestling and roping… Non stop entertainment….as soon as all the evening competitions ended, men and machines moved into the arena and constructed a revolving stage on which Reba Mcentire and her band performed brilliantly for 1 1/2 hours. Truly memorable stuff.
Lydia ( our daughter) and friends arrived this week for a short holiday and we took them out for an authentic Texan dinner. Rustic restaurant with real Cowboys, moose heads, bear skins etc and without a doubt the best steak we have EVER eaten…
We are however feeling the cold here, as this is the worse winter in Texas for many years… The ratio of jeans to shorts was clearly miscalculated so we’ve had to purchase a few warmer clothes from the well- stocked thrift shops.
We’ve had ice on the windscreen and bitter winds, but despite this we are having lots of fun and really enjoying our Texan Adventure.
Thinking of you all and sending icy waves
